STA Visits the North Texas Food Bank

STA Marketing Crew

L-R: Olivia, Patrick, Josh, David, Claire

During the holiday season, it’s always great to give back when you can. Luckily the head-honchos at STA Travel agree and gave the marketing team some free time so we could volunteer at the North Texas Food Bank.

Thanks to Sophia at NTFB, we were all set-up and ready to put our time to good use when we got there.

Our task – put together variety boxes of canned and boxed food to distribute to those in need. We took the canned goods and lined the bottom of the box and then added in the assortment of rice, pasta and other dry goods on the top. One box lasts a family about a week and I’m sure the families and people receiving the boxes really appreciate it.

As people began filling the boxes, it became a little competitive. If you weren’t careful, someone would nick the cake mix you set aside for one of your boxes to use in theirs. Sure, it all goes to those in need, but come on, you want to put together the best box possible, right?

(Sorry Olivia, I snagged some granola bars from your area for one of my boxes. :) )

Some things we learned today:

  • Canned goods are great and by all means – KEEP DONATING WHATEVER YOU CAN – but consider throwing in some of those other non-perishable food items like granola bars and cake mix. Peanut butter is also good too. As the supervisor told us, the protein in the PB goes a long way. (Maybe snag some jelly to make it a nice package for someone in need.)
  • Donate your time! – Maybe you’re not in a great spot yourself and can’t spare the donated food. No problem – donate your time. The Food Bank in North Texas and those around the country need your time to prepare everything for distribution.
  • People donate old stuff. – This is not cool. If you donate something that expired four years ago, you should feel bad about it. Check your expiration dates before donating folks.

So big thanks to the North Texas Food Bank for letting us come and volunteer. You can check out some pics from the fun over on the STA Travel Flickr.
