Vacation in Macau
In September, I took a month long hiatus from normal life to travel around Asia. It’s hard to pick a favorite, but the destination I got the most questions about were Macau. Where is Macau? What’s in Macau? WHY Macau?
Just a one hour ferry ride away from the glittering lights of Hong Kong, the first thing I noticed about Macau was the casinos. If you’re a fan of Vegas, then Macau is the Vegas of Asia complete with its own Venetian, Wynn and MGM Grand. If casinos don’t excite you, what about taking on the world’s highest bungee jump from the Macau Tower? I took the plunge (check the video), and it was well worth it.
Set aside the glitz of the casinos and the thrill of adventure. On my first full day in the city, I realized that Macau is deep in culture and tradition. You can easily walk from one end of the city to the other in 30 minutes. I visited the Ruins of St. Paul’s, one of Macau’s most famous landmarks and caught up on my history lesson at the Museum of Macau. I stopped to pay my respect at the nearby Temple of A-MA where the smell and smoke of incense fill the air. I ate some amazing food (would recommend the dim-sum or Portuguese cuisine) and loved how easy it was to blend in with the Macau way of life.
Although Macau is not the usual vacation spot found on people’s top 10 lists, I would highly recommend making a pit stop if you’re in the area. A day trip is all you need to experience the highlights. The next time I go back, I might do take two of the bungee jump.
Food is my friend,
Olivia
